Fat Injection
Fat injections, or fat transfer, is a procedure used to enhance and restore a more youthful appearance of the face. Gentle liposuction techniques are used to harvest patient’s own fat and immediately inject the fat into the face or lips. This procedure is frequently used with other facial aesthetic surgeries. Fat transfer is frequently done under local anesthesia with sedation or under general anesthesia. Although some transferred fat is expected to resorb, the results can be immediate and lasting.

Fat injections can be used in a fashion similar to other facial fillers. The difference is your own fat is harvested, purified, and reinjected to provide added volume and enhancement.
Fat injections are commonly used to augment areas of the face, including the nasolabial folds, cheekbones, or lips. Fat also can be used in the buttocks, a procedure known as the Brazilian Butt Lift. Please visit Brazilian Butt Lift procedure page for more information.
The results from fat injections can be lasting and even permanent. Although we do expect a portion of the transferred fat to resorb, with proper weight maintenance much of the result can remain intact. Your surgeon will discuss what to expect and how to maintain your results both pre-procedure and during the post-procedure follow-ups.
Depending on the amount of fat to be harvested and transfer location(s), the procedure can be done under straight local anesthesia or with general anesthesia. First, liposuction of the donor area(s) is performed and the fat is allowed to separate into its purest components. The fat is then prepared sterilely for transfer and injected via small access incisions into the recipient site(s). The procedure is performed in our AAAASF-accredited Harrison operatory and is an outpatient procedure. The most common immediate post-procedure findings are bruising, swelling, and discomfort. These usually resolve over the first 2 to 3 weeks. There may be a need to wear a compression garment or other post-procedure dressing for 2 to 12 weeks. The final result can be appreciated at 12 weeks post-procedure. This is ideal for our out of town patients, those with little post-operative help, or those desiring a more private recovery. We can also arrange your stay at a variety of hotels within minutes of our facility and arrange an overnight “sitter” if desired.
